Do you know what your scapula are up to, aerialists?

Aerialists, do you often get cued in the air to do this or that with your shoulder blades but it sounds like a bunch of jibber jabber?

There’s lots of reasons cues don’t resonate, but this is not a cueing post.

Instead it’s about body awareness.

I suggest you that if you’re having trouble finding scapular control in the air, to take it down to the ground. It’s going to feel impossible to control your shoulder blades 20 feet up under the load of your body if you cannot do it with a light resistance band.

If there’s a movement you are struggling with, it can be very helpful to find awareness within your body of movement and sensation. A body map, if you will, that you can then apply to move complex or heavily loaded movements.

And if you’re looking for awareness of your scaps for straight-arm inverts, try this movement and let me know how it goes.

p.s. if you’re interested in fostering awareness as part of your creative practice, I have something new-old coming your way next week!
