Do you like how you move?

Posted on 03/12/2023

Does the thought of doing improv in front of other people make you break out in cold sweat?

Do you wish you could snap your fingers and move fluidly?

Did someone along the way make fun of the way you moved?

We all have stories that we were told or that we tell ourselves about our bodies and how they behave or misbehave.

Mine grew too quickly.

It ached and asked to be carried.

It climbed and ran well, but did not like the too-small shoes of dance classes and how I felt when my mom struggled to get me there on time.

So I continued to climb and run instead of dance.

And when I did dance, I didn’t like what I saw.

I was stiff. I only knew how to climb and run. My body still ached (but I dare not ask to be carried).

But I was stubborn af and kept dancing.

In my bedroom, in my backyard, eventually at auditions, at other people’s shows, at my own shows.

I don’t always like everything I see, but I always find something that I do, and that makes it easier to keep dancing.

Thanks, Brit Crumpton, for inspiring me to do my own movement prompt inside The Parish this month. 😆 I’m looking forward to the space we’re about to create at Unhinged this May in Mexico. 🖤 There’s still room to join us…
